In this episode, my guest is Noam Sobel, PhD, professor of neurobiology in the department of brain sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Dr. Sobel explains his lab’s research on the biological mechanisms of smell (“olfaction”) and how sensing odorants and chemicals in our environment impacts human behavior, cognition, social connections, and hormones. He explains how smell is a crucial component of “social sensing” and how we use olfaction when meeting new people to determine things about their physiology and psychology, and he explains how this impacts friendships and romantic partners. He explains how smell influences emotions, hormone levels, memories and the relationship between breathing and autonomic homeostasis. He describes how smell-based screening tests can aid disease diagnosis and explains his lab’s work on digitization of smell — which may soon allow online communication to include “sending of odors” via the internet. Dr. Sobel’s work illustrates how sensitive human olfaction is and how it drives much of our biology and behavior. #HubermanLab #Science #Smell Thank you to our sponsors AG1 (Athletic Greens): 🤍 ROKA: 🤍 Thesis: 🤍 Helix Sleep: 🤍 InsideTracker: 🤍 Supplements from Momentous 🤍 Huberman Lab Social & Website Instagram: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 LinkedIn: 🤍 Website: 🤍 Newsletter: 🤍 Dr. Noam Sobel Lab website: 🤍 Lab Facebook: 🤍 Publications: 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Articles The Age of Olfactory Bulb Neurons in Humans: 🤍 The Privileged Brain Representation of First Olfactory Associations: 🤍 Mechanisms of scent-tracking in humans: 🤍 Measuring and Characterizing the Human Nasal Cycle: 🤍 Human non-olfactory cognition phase-locked with inhalation: 🤍 A social chemosignaling function for human handshaking: 🤍 There is chemistry in social chemistry: 🤍 MHC-dependent mate preferences in humans: 🤍 An Exteroceptive Block to Pregnancy in the Mouse: 🤍 Fear-Related Chemosignals Modulate Recognition of Fear in Ambiguous Facial Expressions: 🤍 Sniffing the human body volatile hexadecanal blocks aggression in men but triggers aggression in women: 🤍 Menstrual Synchrony and Suppression: 🤍 Regulation of ovulation by human pheromones: 🤍 Human Tears Contain a Chemosignal: 🤍 Why Only Humans Shed Emotional Tears: 🤍 Revisiting the revisit: added evidence for a social chemosignal in human emotional tears: 🤍 Increase of tear volume in dogs after reunion with owners is mediated by oxytocin: 🤍 An olfactory self-test effectively screens for COVID-19: 🤍 Other Resources Joachim Löw video: 🤍 Osmo: 🤍 Odor Space: 🤍 Timestamps 00:00:00 Dr. Noam Sobel 00:03:46 Sponsors: ROKA, Thesis, Helix Sleep 00:06:46 Olfaction Circuits (Smell) 00:14:49 Loss & Regeneration of Smell, Illness 00:21:39 Brain Processing of Smell 00:24:40 Smell & Memories 00:27:52 Sponsor: AG1 (Athletic Greens) 00:29:07 Humans & Odor Tracking 00:39:25 The Alternating Nasal Cycle & Autonomic Nervous System 00:48:18 Cognitive Processing & Breathing 00:54:47 Neurodegenerative Diseases & Olfaction 01:00:12 Congenital Anosmia 01:05:01 Sponsor: InsideTracker 01:06:19 Handshaking, Sharing Chemicals & Social Sensing 01:15:07 Smelling Ourselves & Smelling Others 01:22:02 Odors & Romantic Attraction 01:24:58 Vomeronasal Organ, “Bruce Effect” & Miscarriage 01:40:20 Social Chemo-Signals, Fear 01:50:26 Chemo-Signaling, Aggression & Offspring 02:03:57 Menstrual Cycle Synchronization 02:12:11 Sweat, Tears, Emotions & Testosterone 02:27:46 Science Politics 02:37:54 Food Odors & Nutritional Value 02:45:34 Human Perception & Odorant Similarity 02:52:12 Digitizing Smell, COVID-19 & Smell 03:05:50 Medical Diagnostic Future & Olfaction Digitization 03:10:55 Zero-Cost Support, YouTube Feedback, Spotify & Apple Reviews, Sponsors, Momentous, Social Media, Neural Network Newsletter Title Card Photo Credit: Mike Blabac - 🤍 Disclaimer: 🤍

Hank resists the urge to devour a slice of pizza so that he can walk you through the way we experience our major special senses. It all boils down to one thing: sensory cells translate chemical, electromagnetic, and mechanical stimuli into action potentials that our nervous system can make sense of. Today we're focusing on smell (olfaction) and taste (gustation), which are chemical senses that call on chemoreceptors. As usual, we'll begin with a quick look at how these things can go wrong. Pleasant or Unpleasant? Let's get to know the five senses step by step. This week... It's the Sense of Smell 👃 👉SUBSCRIBE TO HAPPY LEARNING! 🤍 👉Web site: 🤍 👉Follow us on Facebook: 🤍 Recommended video: The circulatory system 🤍 - Hello Friends! Welcome to a new Happy Learning Video. Today, we’re going to get to know a very nosy sense, today, we’re going to get to know the sense of smell. The sense of smell lets us capture smells from substances. Its organ is the nose and its function is very simple. Smells travel through air, they enter through the nostrils, and arrive at the nasal cavities, where we find, the yellow pituitary, which is in charge of capturing smells. This information travels to the brain, through the olfactory nerve, and it’s here, in the brain, where we identify smells. if smells are good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant, soft or strong. The sense of smell is the most sensitive, since only a minimum quantity of matter stimulates it and makes it react. Humans detect up to 10 thousand different smells, but overtime, we lose the sense, that’s why children can distinguish more smells than adults. The sense of smell in lots of animals is more powerful than in humans. The African Elephant has the best sense of smell in the world. Its nose, apart from being the longest in the animal kingdom is the best smeller. But do you know which animal holds a record for smelling at a distance? Well it's a moth! A male moth can smell a female moth up to 10km away. Well, now we know a lot more things about the sense of smell, but we don’t want to say goodbye without giving you a tip! We need to take care of our sense of smell. We can’t insert anything through the nostrils, no sticks, cotton balls, nothing at all, also, when we go through somewhere which smells very bad or where there are strong smelling products, it’s better to cover your nose and move away. Okay? Always remember. Goodbye Friends! See you in the next Happy Learning Video.

Are scent memories important? Do you think manufacturers of scented products are concerned with memory and emotion when it comes to marketing? You would be surprised. Perfumer, Holladay Saltz, asks poignant questions about whether such companies should have the influence they do over your memories. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. It was filmed and edited by Tijo Media at the Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Arts Center in Richmond, VA. #fragrance #perfume #scent #seawater #memory #senses While working as a creative director and chief creative officer of web-based technology and media companies, Holladay Saltz became increasingly disillusioned by digital media’s frayed connections to the tangible world. A chance reading of Diane Ackerman’s, “A Natural History of the Senses,” led her to reexamine her lifelong fascination with the sense of smell and the ancient, storied history of fragrance and fragrant raw materials. After years of study in the process of formulation and production, she was able to train with Le Labo Fragrances in New York City and went on to found the independent fragrance line Apoteker Tepe in 2014. Now as a Perfumer, she now splits her time between New York City and Providence, Rhode Island. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at 🤍

limbic system at the olfactory bulbs. Central Details of olfaction system The main olfactory bulb transmits pulses to both mitral and tufted cells, which help determine odor concentration based on the time certain neuron clusters fire (called 'timing code'). These cells also note differences between highly similar odors and use that data to aid in later recognition. The cells are different with mitral having low firing-rates and being easily inhibited by neighboring cells, while tufted have high rates of firing and are more difficult to inhibit. Stria terminalis, specifically bed nuclei (BNST), act as the information pathway between the amygdala and hypothalamus, as well as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. BNST abnormalities often lead to sexual confusion and immaturity. BNST also connects to the septal area, rewarding sexual behavior. Mitral pulses to the hypothalamus promote/discourage feeding, whereas accessory olfactory bulb pulses regulate reproductive and odor-related-reflex processes. The hippocampus (although minimally connected to the main olfactory bulb) receives almost all of its olfactory information via the amygdala (either directly or via the BNST). The hippocampus forms new and reinforces existing memories. Similarly, the parahippocampus encodes, recognizes and contextualizes scenes. The parahippocampal gyrus houses the topographical map for olfaction. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is heavily correlated with the cingulate gyrus and septal area to act out positive/negative reinforcement. The OFC is the expectation of reward/punishment in response to stimuli. The OFC represents the emotion and reward in decision making. The anterior olfactory nucleus distributes reciprocal signals between the olfactory bulb and piriform cortex. The anterior olfactory nucleus is the memory hub for smell. 1: Olfactory bulb 2: Mitral cells 3: Bone 4: Nasal epithelium 5: Glomerulus 6: Olfactory receptor cells Clinical significance Loss of smell is known as anosmia. Anosmia can occur on both sides or a single side. Olfactory problems can be divided into different types based on their malfunction. The olfactory dysfunction can be total (anosmia), incomplete (partial anosmia, hyposmia, or microsmia), distorted (dysosmia), or can be characterized by spontaneous sensations like phantosmia. An inability to recognize odors despite a normally functioning olfactory system is termed olfactory agnosia. Hyperosmia is a rare condition typified by an abnormally heightened sense of smell. Like vision and hearing, the olfactory problems can be bilateral or unilateral meaning if a person has anosmia on the right side of the nose but not the left, it is a unilateral right anosmia. On the other hand, if it is on both sides of the nose it is called bilateral anosmia or total anosmia. Destruction to olfactory bulb, tract, and primary cortex (brodmann area 34) results in anosmia on the same side as the destruction. Also, irritative lesion of the uncus results in olfactory hallucinations. Damage to the olfactory system can occur by traumatic brain injury, cancer, infection, inhalation of toxic fumes, or neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. These conditions can cause anosmia. In contrast, recent finding suggested the molecular aspects of olfactory dysfunction can be recognized as a hallmark of amyloidogenesis-related diseases and there may even be a causal link through the disruption of multivalent metal ion transport and storage.Doctors can detect damage to the olfactory system by presenting the patient with odors via a scratch and sniff card or by having the patient close their eyes and try to identify commonly available odors like coffee or peppermint candy. Doctors must exclude other diseases that inhibit or eliminate 'the sense of smell' such as chronic colds or sinusitus before making the diagnosis that there is permanent damage to the olfactory system. Prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in the general US population was assessed by questionnaire and examination in a national health survey in 2012-2014.[26] Among over a thousand persons aged 40 years and older, 12.0% reported a problem with smell in the past 12 months and 12.4% had olfactory dysfunction on examination. Prevalence rose from 4.2% at age 40-49 to 39.4% at 80 years and older and was higher in men than women, in blacks and Mexican Americans than in whites and in less than more educated. Of concern for safety, 20% of persons aged 70 and older were unable to identify smoke and 31%, natural gas.
Here is some background information on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from songfacts.com : Kurt Cobain: "I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies." Cobain wrote this for Nirvana. It came together in a jam session when he played it for the band. Kathleen Hanna, part of the group Bikini Kill, gave Cobain the idea for the title when she spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his bedroom wall after a night of drinking and spraying graffiti around the Seattle area. In his pre-Courtney Love days, Cobain went out with Bikini Kill lead singer Tobi Vail, but she dumped him. Vail wore Teen Spirit deodorant, and Hanna was implying that Cobain was marked with her scent. Cobain didn't know it when he wrote the song, but Teen Spirit is a brand of deodorant marketed to young girls. Kurt thought Hanna was complimenting him on his rebellious spirit. Sales of Teen Spirit deodorant shot up when this became a hit, even though it is never mentioned in the lyrics. This was the first "Alternative" song to become a huge hit. Since "alternative" implies lack of popularity, people started referring to the genré as "Modern Rock." It helped ignite the "grunge" craze, characterized by loud guitars, angst-ridden lyrics, and flannel. The group hated the video, but everyone else loved it. The concept was "Pep Rally from Hell." The cheerleaders were strippers. Two days before shooting the video, the band played a show at The Roxy Theater in Los Angeles where they invited everyone to come by the shoot and be in the video. The shoot, which took place at Culver City Studios in California, took 8 hours, so they had no problem getting the kids to come out of the bleachers and form a mosh pit at the end of the day. The video was inspired by the movie and song Rock And Roll High School by the Ramones. At the end of the video, when the band and the teenagers smash the set, it is real. The band and the teenagers had began getting mad after being on set for over 8 hours, and one of the teenagers asked if everyone could destroy the set. The producer said yes, so they destroyed it. The girls who played the cheerleaders in the video were originally supposed to be very fat and unattractive (Cobain's idea). The Director did not like this idea, but still allowed the cheerleaders to have "sleeve" tattoos and the symbol for anarchy on their shirts. Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this called "Smells Like Nirvana." He shot his video in the same gym with the same janitor, but in his video, the janitor was wearing a tutu. Cobain said he was "flattered" by the parody: "I loved, it, it was really amusing." The distinctive bridge was originally at the end of the song. Producer Butch Vig had them move it to the middle. Tori Amos covered this in 1992. She was on tour when Cobain died in 1994 and performed her version 2 days later at a show in Dublin. Patti Smith also recorded the song for her covers album Twelve. The line "Here we are now, entertain us" was something Cobain used to say when he entered a party. Krist Novoselic: "Kurt really despised the mainstream. That's what "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was all about: The mass mentality of conformity." For a while, MTV refused to air the video. When they finally did, it was on their alternative show 120 Minutes. When the song became a hit, the video went into hot rotation. The album cover shows a baby swimming toward a dollar bill. Cobain and Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic had seen a documentary on underwater birth and wanted to use that image on the cover. Pictures of babies being born underwater were too gross, so they hired a photographer to take some underwater shots during a water babies class. The baby they chose was Spencer Elden, who was 4 months old at the time. At many of their later shows, Nirvana did not play this. Courtney Love deliberated a long time before allowing this to be used in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, who along with Love control the Nirvana catalog, claimed Love was trying to get the title role in the movie, which went to Nicole Kidman. The opening guitar part is a small variation on the main riff of Boston's "More Than A Feeling." This was noted by a Rolling Stone magazine writer years later, but not as an accusation of plagiarism. Influences and similarities like this are everywhere in Rock music.

Some of us can't get enough of that new car smell. But certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that help create this aroma are linked to cancer. While this doesn't mean new car smell definitely increases your chance of getting cancer, it does mean companies need to carefully test their vehicles to make sure these VOCs are present at safe levels.
