Today we're going to take a look at mineral extraction or the removal of rocks and minerals from the Earths' crust and examine how this human activity impacts all aspects of Geography. We'll focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo and take a look at how the mining of minerals such as cobalt, has significantly impacted life in this region. Did you know that minerals are all around us? Minerals are the building blocks that make up rocks! They are the ores that we extract metals from to make electronics. They’re in the soils we need to grow the plants we eat for food. They’re even in our jewelry and makeup! But, what is a mineral? In this video, Mineralogist Dr. Gabriela Farfan from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History describes the five characteristics that all minerals have in common while sharing mineral specimens like the Berns Quartz from the museum's collection. This video is designed for students in Grades 3-5. After watching this video, students will be able to identify the shared features of all minerals, recall mineral uses, and know that minerals are all around us. This video complements the museum’s free school programs for students in grades 3-5: - Identifying Minerals: An in-person school program where students classify a variety of minerals by testing their luster, streak, hardness, color, and magnetism. - Rocks & Minerals: An online program where students virtually visit the Museum's Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals and, with a museum educator and their classmates, use problem-solving skills to unlock the mystery of different rocks, minerals, and their uses. Chris from Mountain Time has been getting some requests to include some Mineral or The Gloria Record tunes in his weekly acoustic videos, so we're proud to present the acoustic rendition of the Mineral classic "Slower." "When Mineral started we were coming from two different bands, Scott and I from a band called I The Worm, and Jeremy and our original drummer Matt Hammon from a band called Nothing In Return. For the first handful of shows we were actually playing half I The Worm songs and half Nothing In Return songs because there were no Mineral songs yet. Once we did start writing new material it took a while to find our own voice and settle into something we could all be excited about. "Slower" was the first song we wrote that really set the path for Mineral I think. There hasn’t been a Mineral show since we wrote it where it wasn’t played. My girlfriend at the time I wrote it told me she thought it would never work with the band and that it should remain an acoustic song. So, there’s some history for you. And here it is acoustic again after all these years. The sun was shining, the doves were cooing, the wind chimes were chiming, the dogs were barking and afterwards my neighbors came over to the fence and told me they had really enjoyed the song while sitting out in their yard. Hope you all are staying well and sane and soaking in the sun somewhere today." It's called lonsdaleite, and researchers are hard at work to make it themselves. Corrections: 3:18 The carbon atoms in diamond and lonsdaleite both bond to four neighbors. What makes lonsdaleite stronger is how those bonds are arranged. It's a hexagonal pattern that is more resilient than the cubic pattern of diamonds. Song from the album The Power of Failing Lyrics: I wouldn't mind if you took me in my sleep tonight I wouldn't even put up a fight I wouldn't care if you took it all away today I'm sure I wouldn't even miss the pain But I know I've got to live my life And roll around on the ground and feel the strife And realize along the way that I'm nothing more Than a grain of salt in the salt of the eart And everything is grace So come on with the darkness Come on with the fear Cause I've got to start somewhere And it might as well be here When I'm finally naked and standing in the sunlight I'll look back at all of this selfishness and foolish pride And laugh at myself
